Volunteer firefighter Steve Mattingly was directing traffic around a blaze when he was struck by a car and severely injured in view of his wife and children. Steve suffered broken bones, amnesia and brain damage, and must cope with constant pain. His wife Melissa is now the sole wage earner for the family, which includes their two young daughters. With no hope of repairing their single-wide trailer, the Mattinglys were living in cramped conditions when they learned that they would receive a new home, custom-built by "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" with the help of United Rentals equipment and volunteers.
