Bernard McFarland grew up in poverty, but was instilled with a love of learning by his parents and mentors. After graduating from college and serving in the military, he returned to Indianapolis with his three sons, determined to encourage neighborhood children to pursue their dreams. Bernard's Pack House 2000 program opens children's minds with trips to libraries, museums and cultural events, often operating with little or no funds. The McFarland family's dilapidated house has now been replaced with a comfortable new home and resource center from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and United Rentals.
